Today was our trip to Mt Rushmore, South Dakota. This was the first sunny day since Saturday and it was nice to enjoy the blue sky and the "warmer" weather. Although most people are quite familiar with the monument from pictures, it is an amazing site to see in person.
I was reading that it takes granite 1000 years to weather one inch and that the monument was built three inches larger so that the presidents will be recogonizable 3000 years later. Its also interesting to note that in 1998 a repository or records was placed into the Hall of Records ( a room carved out behind the faces) and in it among other things is a description of the persons and the reason they were carved into the mountain. Can you imagine a time 3000 years from now when such a record would be needed?
We took the time to walk the trails and all of us really enjoyed the monument. This evening we also attended the lighting ceremony. There is a great film presentation about Freedom, America's Legacy that was extremly moving and I think we were all reminded just how special this country is and how great a blessing it is to be an American.

I have always wanted to visit Mt. Rushmore! We're actually not too far a drive from here in Denver--I think it's actually closer than driving to SLC! My goal is to go there for next 4th of July. They do fireworks over the mountain and I've heard it is just spectacular!
Have a safe trip! I'm enjoying reading about your adventures. :)
"out the door" surely fits your life right now- busy and on the go. So glad you got the house you wanted (i never heard of a housing draft but in the military it doesn't surprise me.) Enjoy the rest of your travels and I wish you well as you get settled in your new home.
And- I love these two pictures from your Mt Rushmore trip!
