our way we saw countless signs for Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls so
we thought we would stop and see what all the fuss was about. We were
more than happy we did.
The story goes that a known cave system existed since native Americans
lived in the area. Both the Union and Confederates used the cave for a
hospital. In 1905 the Union Railroad came through and they permanently
sealed off the enterance. In 1928 a young man from the area bought the
land above the cave and began to drill down to the known cavern at 410
feet. Well at 260 ft the drillers hit a sudden gust of air. Leonard
took a couple people with him and after 17 hours of exploring he came
out with wild stories of awesome geological formations and a waterfall
that had never been seen before. This water fall he named after his
wife, Ruby, who made the jorney the next day. Ruby Falls is the
largest underground fall accesible to the public.
The kids has a blast and loved seeing all the different geologic
features. Tomorrow is the Tennessee Aqurium.
